Want a unique sounding and challenging piano solo to tackle? "Methods 1-5" could be your next piece! We have some challenging rhythms here above all else. Moreover, one can think of these methods as working 5 different styles of playing. This solo was written to explore some possibilities of atonal composition and how it relates to piano dexterity. Method 1 - Toccata : A groove based toccata which utilizes and enhances malleability. Touch is key here, as there are brief, contrasting light sections at the 3/2 time signatures. Method 2 - Antics : This slow, yet intricate Method can be thought of as written out swing. This Method works on going back and forth between the strict 16ths and the triplet rhythms. What's harmonically intriguing is the "Spy" chord played through out : Root - flat 3rd - 5th - Maj. 7th Method 3 - The Dance : This Method works through 3/4 and 5/4 dance patterns. This will be a fun one because of its range. Method 4 - Stunts ! : The real "stunt" here in this Method is the time signatures and how they change. As long as the performer stays in the groove, this will actually flow naturally. The 3/4 time signatures help stabilize getting out of the alternating 4/4-7/16's. A double barline is placed after every time signature change. Method 5 - March. : A sense of rhythmic tension is released here as march-like rhythms are presented. There's a surprise ending that can really function as a musical joke for the audience.
